Rainbows Over Willow Creek! Each spring large numbers of rainbows that overwintered in the Susitna River will move into the many tributaries to engage in spawning activities and then move back into the Su until late summer when they again return to the tribs to follow the salmon migrations. Early season anglers such as Rick Davies will often find good fishing at the mouth of Parks Highway streams such as Willow Creek in May where downmigrating post-spawn rainbows linger to fatten up on emerging salmon fry and outmigrating smolt. Patterns imitating these tiny baitfish are often the most successful for fly fishers targeting big rainbows like this one. Photo Courtesy of Rick Davies
